Flying silhouettes over a colourful wash on ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several solid black silhouettes of flying figures moving diagonally across the skin. Behind them is a soft, blended wash of blue, purple, pink and orange that fades at the edges, giving a watercolour or night-sky effect. The tattoo sits along the side of the ribs, with the figures arranged from the lower left toward the upper right.

"Don't stare," her father said from the top of the stairs, his lamp swinging. "They don't care for it." She stared anyway. The smallest one flicked back towards her, a bright speck trailing a tail of light that turned from orange to rose to a bruised violet as it climbed. Behind them the sky had gone the colour of spilt paint, blue bleeding into pink, the stars smudged where the colours had run.

Her brother Owen had gone out on the rocks last winter with a kite made from a feed sack and a broom handle. He came back before dark, soaked and furious, insisting he had reached the height of the lamp. Nobody believed him, and he never mentioned it again, though he still kept the sack folded in his coat pocket.

Mira climbed the last of the stairs and set her palm flat on the cold glass. The lead silhouette banked once, dipped its shoulder, and dove low over the waves before rising again, and she understood it was waiting for someone brave enough to follow. She fetched her coat, and her father, seeing her face, lit the lamp without a word.
