Traditional flash sheet with skull, hand and snakes

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A sheet of traditional-style tattoo flash showing a skull with crossbones, an open hand with flowers and drips, a snake wrapped around a heart, mushrooms, a frog, a spider, a rainbow with a flower and a seated golden figure. The designs use bold black outlines with flat fills in red, yellow, green and blue, set against a plain pale background. Each motif is arranged separately in a grid-like layout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pell had been pinning the same nine designs to the wall of her back room for thirty-one years, and the frog had never once stayed in its box. Every morning she found it climbing out of the corner square, sitting on the spider's web, or sulking under the rainbow with its legs folded like a clerk's. She blamed the damp off the harbour and the cheap red ink from Hull.

The skull came from a dead captain's cabin, she said, and the hand from a bishop who had lost a bet at cards. The snake was older than either. It had coiled round the heart so long that the heart had grown fond of it, and whenever the gas lamp guttered the snake swelled a little, as though it might be tempted to leave. Mushrooms grew in the cracks of the plaster. The seated figure in gold, too stout to be a saint and too calm to be a sinner, pointed at the rainbow and said nothing at all.

On the night the storm took the chimney, Ada pulled the sheet down to dry by the fire. When she came back with the lamp the frog had gone. In its square sat a small wet thumbprint of green, and beside it, pencilled in her own careful hand, was a single word she did not remember writing: ashore.

She laughed, then did not. Nobody had asked for a frog in a month. Still, she took her needle and drew a little pier beneath the rainbow, and the frog, she was almost sure, was sitting on it when she turned out the light.
