Sugar skull cat with rose and bow

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

The drawing shows a white cat-shaped skull with black eye sockets, gold dotted highlights and a small black heart-shaped nose. A red rose sits on the forehead, a red bow with a tiny skull sits by one ear, and a large red rose fills the lower half. Bold black outlines, shading in darker red and pink, and green leaves and gold scrollwork on a yellow background give it a traditional tattoo flash appearance.

The bow came loose during the second tango, which Aunt Marisol said was my fault for pinning it on with a hatpin. I found it in the cloakroom lying on a heap of wet umbrellas, its little skull grinning up at me as though it had done it on purpose. Out on the floor the band was sliding into a bolero, and the paper marigolds swayed under the lights of the Palais in Walsall.

Mr Pritchard from the tram depot was waiting at the edge of the boards, rubbing his shoes on the backs of his trousers. Aunt Marisol had promised him a turn and she was not going to be late for it. "Fix it, cariño," she said, smoothing the ribbon with one finger as if she could press the whole night straight again. I told her the cat in the photograph had never worn a bow at all. She laughed and said the cat had only been waiting for someone to bring her one.

The rose came from the piano, she said. Nobody opened that lid any more, but every November someone left a red rose on it for the dancers who had gone before. The cat that lived in the rafters ate the petals one winter and came down the next morning with a rose pinned to her forehead, her teeth showing like piano keys, and nobody had the nerve to take it off her.

I pinned the bow back on, still crooked, and went to fetch a fresh rose from the piano. When I lifted the lid there was only a dry stem and a small black paw print on the wood. Up in the dark above the stage, something white turned its head towards the music, and the bow on its ear caught the light as it began to dance.
