Before the bell at St Oswin's, Agathe Fell lit the ovens in the village of Harrowdene, and she always kept the back door open for the swallows. They nested in the eaves above the flour store, and every morning the first of them dropped down through the steam to take crumbs from the cooling racks.

One spring a stranger came in with the swallows, a lad with a canvas bag and a brass key on a red cord. He asked for work and she gave him the bottom shelf and the worst oven. He learned to read dough by its smell and to keep his sleeves rolled above the fire. He never said what the key opened, only that it had been his grandmother's, and that she had given him the birds as a sign he would be safe on the road.
All summer the swallows dipped and wheeled over the yellow roses in the garden, and the lad planted a blue rose by the well because he said it would never take. It took. Then one morning in September the swallows did not come down, and he stood in the doorway with flour to his elbows, watching the sky go grey over the hill.
Agathe found him there and said nothing. She put a warm loaf in his hands, still too hot to hold, and pointed up at the eaves. Two birds sat on the gutter, waiting for the sun. He broke the bread and threw them the first crumb, and that was how she knew he would stay the winter.
