Flower tattoo on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large flower with layered petals and leaves is tattooed on the forearm, with the bloom at the centre and leaves spreading outward. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading across the petals and leaves. Small touches of orange and peach add warmth against the grey, and the arm is shown in a loose, close crop against a blurred background.

The bloom had opened in the night, and Mae found it at first light, folded in the back of the van beside the spare tyre. Its petals were grey as river stones, layered so tightly they looked stitched, with a blush of peach where the sun had started to touch the rim. She had bought the cutting from a woman in Lone Pine who swore it would not last the road. For three hundred miles it had sat wrapped in a damp tea towel on the passenger seat, and Mae had talked to it the way her father used to talk to a stubborn engine.

The desert road ran dead straight through the scrub, dry washes branching off either side like veins on the back of a hand. Nothing out here had been planted on purpose. Mae had grown up in the orchards at the valley's far end, where her father kept bees and swore at the weather, and she had never understood why he drove this stretch every spring with a coffee tin of seeds rattling in the glovebox. He had said the flowers came up where they were owed. She had thought that was the kind of thing a man said when he wanted to be left alone with a map.
At a petrol stop with one pump and a dog asleep under it, she borrowed a trowel from the man inside, who did not ask what for. Behind the car park, where the ground was cracked and grey, she dug a hole the depth of her hand and set the cutting in it, pressing the earth firm around its stem. The bloom looked absurd there, a careful thing in a careless place, its leaves dusted with grit.
She poured the last of the water from her flask over the roots, then stood and wiped her palms on her jeans. Back on the road, the mirror showed the flower getting smaller against the sage, grey on grey, until a dip in the land took it away. She kept the tea towel on the seat beside her anyway, damp and empty, and drove on towards the ridge.
