Traditional rose flash design

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a single rose in full bloom with a tightly curled centre, surrounded by broad leaves on a long stem. Bold black outlines and grey shading define the petals, with short hatching marks around the bloom and a spiral flourish near the base of the stem. The design sits on a cream, diamond-shaped background and uses no colour ink.

Her grandson Tom went out with a spade to dig it up. He found the roots went down further than any root should, and the stem was as thick as a finger and curled at the base like the end of a fern. When he pulled, a thorn opened his palm, and the blood ran into the soil and the soil took it without a sound. He stood there a long time, then went home without the spade.

That night the wind came from the north and brought with it the smell of wet bark and something sweet beneath it. Tom's mother said he should go back in the morning and cut the thing at the root. But in the morning the bloom had opened, broad and grey as a winter sky, with its leaves spread out around it like hands waiting to be shaken. Tom looked at the tight centre of the flower and thought of his grandmother's mouth closed on a secret, and he understood that the forest had sent for him, and that he had already said yes by bleeding on it.
