Peony and rose cluster pen drawing

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A cluster of three open flowers, with a closed bud at the upper left and several serrated leaves, is drawn in black ink on white paper. The petals are outlined with bold contours and shaded with dense fine hatching, with stippled centres giving depth. The flowers fill the centre of the frame, with the bud and leaves arranged around them in an asymmetrical, flowing composition.

The peonies had gone over by the time Marion got the letter from the council, so she cut the heavy heads anyway and carried them in on a tray that still smelled of the cleaning soap her sister used to buy. Paper bags of bulbs were stacked by the back door, labelled in biro in a hand that wasn't hers. She had found them in the shed under a sheet of newspaper dated the spring before the hospital.

The man from the council wanted the back wall down by August. He stood on the path with a clipboard and said the roses along it were a hazard, which was fair, because they had grown over the gate and up into the guttering. Marion said she would think about it. She did not say that the hybrid tea in the corner had been planted the year they moved in, or that her sister had stood at the sink each evening counting the buds like coins, saying each one had a name and a temper.

She went out with secateurs and cut back the bramble and the rambling stems, then knelt in the wet grass and found a bud she had missed, closed tight at the top of a bare cane. It was the colour of a bruised plum at the seam. She sat back on her heels and watched it for a long time, the leaves around it still glossy from the rain, and decided the council could wait until it opened.
