Traditional whales and flowers on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A traditional style tattoo of two grey whales swimming diagonally, with one whale's tail fin at the top and a second head at the bottom. Bold black outlines and soft grey shading give the bodies volume, while patterned bands of yellow, orange and red decorate the lower whale. Red droplets, small red and yellow flowers and dark leaves fill the space around the whales against bare skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The two grey whales came in on the ebb, the cow hugging the shelf of the bay while her calf kept tight against her flank, and Ada Penhallow counted their breaths from the cliff the way her grandmother counted the cutter's lights. Four breaths, then the long dark back rolling under. Her brother Tom had stopped talking about the nets the week the calf was born. He said the sea had a habit of giving back what it was offered, and he had started leaving his hook-line coiled on the quay.

By August the bay smelled of wrack and warm tar, and the cliff field was furred with sea-pinks and poppies gone to seed. Ada cut a bunch of them with the bread knife and walked down to the slip, where Tom was scrubbing red paint from the bow of the old dinghy. Drops from his brush had bloomed bright across the grey stone. "You'll not get that out of the wood," she said. "No," he said, and kept scrubbing, but he left the paint where it had splashed.

They rowed out together at slack water with the flowers tied to the thwart. The cow surfaced twenty yards off, then the calf, close enough that Ada could see the pale mark of an old net-line across its shoulder. Tom laid the oars across his knees. Nobody spoke. Ada dropped the bunch overboard and watched the poppies scatter red across the swell, and the calf turned once, slow as a question, before the pair of them slid away towards open water.
