Heart and banner with flowers on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bold colour tattoo of an ornate red heart with decorative caps and pins, a gold banner reading MOM across its centre, and a teal gem. Yellow sunflowers, green leaves and a string of pearls frame the heart, with soft grey smoke shading behind it. Thick black outlines define the motifs, and the design fills the frame on the outer thigh against a denim edge.

The sunflowers came up the hill above Inchcolm harbour the August the last ferry stopped running, and nobody could say who had planted them. Maggie Dunn blamed the gulls. Old Tam Rennie blamed the wind, which he said carried seed across the Minch the way it carried everything else, and he would not hear otherwise. The children took them as a sign, though none of them could agree what the sign meant.

Down at the harbour wall stood a brass-capped jar with a red heart painted on its side. Nobody remembered who had put it there. Fishermen used it as a post box, sealing their letters with wax and tucking them under the lid, and whoever sailed to the mainland that week carried the bundle across and posted it there. Maggie kept the rainwater in it for her geraniums, and she checked the lid every morning before she lit the stove.
On the first grey Tuesday in September she found a single folded page under the lid, dry as a biscuit, in Ruairidh Rennie's untidy hand. He had written that the nets were full, that the gannets were thick over the skerry, and that he would be home before the sunflowers went to seed. The page was dated the Thursday before, and his boat had not come in since.
Maggie read it twice on the harbour wall, then walked up the hill to Tam's door and handed it to him without a word. When they looked back down at the water, the sunflowers had all turned their heads towards the bay.
