Treble clef and rainbow splash on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A white treble clef sits at the centre of a rainbow splash of colour that covers the upper part of the forearm, with the clef shown as bare skin. Black linework of musical notes runs along the lower edge, and thin black vines trail across the top of the arm. The splashes are soft-edged and layered in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple against a blue fabric background.

The Chancellor of Verrow sent you up the bell tower road in the last week of the dry season with three brushes, a pot of lime and a sealed order: the tower was to be made white by the feast of Saint Oda. Its clappers had been carried down to the river years ago, and the Chancellor held that a grey, silent tower was a vulgarity. You went because the lime merchant's daughter had asked you to.

The ringer, Hesper Quill, sat on the bottom step with her hands folded over a dyer's apron. You scraped a palm-sized patch of whitewash and found sky blue plaster beneath, and a curl of black ink, a treble clef as tall as your arm. 'My grandmother's generation painted it,' she said. 'Paint what you like. Just leave that one shape.'
You worked six days. You mixed madder, weld and woad from the same vats that dyed the town's washing and laid them on wet lime in soft overlapping clouds: red and orange at the base, yellow tipped with green, a bruised purple near the louvres, blue running down into the stone. The clef you left bare, so its white curl sat in the middle of all that colour like a held breath. Along the bottom you painted quavers and crotchets, and up the corners, black vines that would never bloom.
On the feast day the Chancellor's men came up the road with their buckets and stopped at the foot of the steps. Hesper rang a cracked handbell she kept under her apron, and a thin note went out across the valley. The men looked up for a long time. Then they walked back down the hill and reported the tower finished, and nobody argued, because the wind was coming through the louvres and the whole painted wall was humming, very softly, like a key being tried.
