Forearm tattoo of black outlined circular motifs with blue and purple watercolour galaxy shading and small stars, on the inner forearm.

Circular motifs over a galaxy wash on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A row of overlapping black-outlined circles with concentric rings and small dots runs across the forearm, resembling Gallifreyan-style glyphs. Behind and between the circles are soft blue, lilac and purple wash shapes with white sparkle highlights, suggesting a galaxy. The composition is a horizontal band across the forearm, photographed from above on a wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself on the coal box, lad, and mind the kettle, it's hotter than it looks. You want the story of the Tuesday the canal went to sky? My father swore to it on his mother's Bible, and he never once swore to anything he hadn't seen.

It was February, the cut frozen solid at Braunston, and the lock keepers had all gone home to their fires. Dad was bringing the Patience down through Hatton with a load of Welsh slate, and there was no moon, only the water holding stars. Halfway down the flight he saw the lock gates had writing on them. Not chalk, not paint, just circles, one set inside another, with small dots fixed on their rims like rivets. The rings glowed from behind in blue and violet, as if someone had poured the night into the paddles.

He couldn't read it, but he knew it was meant for him. Each ring had a hook on it that pointed to the next, the way a sentence runs on, and the last one was a bright dot sitting dead in the centre, where the stars were thickest. He laid his palm flat on the cold oak and the rings swam up under it, sparks climbing his wrist like a rope.

When he looked again the ice had cracked, the lock was full, and the Patience was floating up towards a sky that wasn't quite the sky. I'll not tell you what he said he read there. Some things you keep for yourself and pass on by hand.
