Treble clef vine with red birds on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A treble clef is formed from twisting brown branches with thin tendrils and green leaves. Two red songbirds perch on the upper curves, and a small red rose sits near the lower loop. The branches are shaded with grey and brown tones for depth, while the birds are rendered in vivid red with soft highlights.

The branches had been growing wrong since the spring the church bells cracked, and Ada Penrose blamed the bell-ringer's boy for it. He had climbed the old yew at Sallow Lock to hang a rope swing and left the bark stripped in a long spiral, and by June the wound had put out shoots that curled upward instead of down. Her father said a tree remembers how it was taught to grow. Ada said nothing, only went out each evening with a bucket of river water and a bent knife to coax the tendrils back onto the fence wire.

The redstarts came in July, two of them, bright as spilled paint against the grey wood. They sat on the upper loops of the trellis and sang at the lock-keeper's wife, who pretended not to listen. Ada started leaving crumbs on the towpath stones. By August the birds were fed from her palm, and the vines had twisted themselves into a shape she recognised from the hymnal, the tall curled letter her mother had taught her to read before she could read words.

A single rose had opened near the bottom loop, small and stubborn, where the knife had nicked the bark. Ada noticed it on the last evening of the month, when the barge came up from Thrapston with its crew of sullen boys and a fiddle that never stopped. The lock-keeper's wife crossed the lawn to fetch her in. The birds lifted together and settled on the bow rail, and Ada, for the first time, did not follow them to watch.
