Two birds on a blossom branch across the back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two small songbirds perched on a thin black branch, one with a purple head and yellow body and the other with blue, orange and yellow plumage. Red blossoms and buds run along the branch, which curves diagonally across the skin. The birds are shaded with soft, watercolour-like washes, while the branch and twigs are drawn in dark, fairly bold linework.

Ruth had been arguing with the surveyor since Tuesday, and the cherry tree at the end of the allotment was still standing, which was more than anyone had expected. Two finches had come with the spring. The yellow one had a habit of landing on the lowest branch and scolding the purple one until it flew up to the top, where the blossom was thinnest and the wind was worst.

Nobody on the site had ever seen them fight. They simply took turns. Mornings, the yellow bird sang from the fence post by the shed while the purple one picked at the buds. Afternoons they swapped, and the whole allotment seemed to lean towards whichever was singing.
When the council's men came with their ropes, Ruth stood under the tree with a flask of tea and said she would not move. The foreman laughed until he looked up. Both birds had settled on the same bough, the one that curved out over the path, and neither was budging. He studied the bough, then Ruth, then he coiled the ropes and walked back to the van without a word.
The letter came in June saying the tree could stay, provided it was pruned by someone qualified. Ruth pruned it herself that autumn, cutting everything except the bough that reached over the path, because two birds had decided that was the place to be.
