Tree across a full back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large tree trunk and branches run down the centre of the back, with roots spreading toward the waist. The left side is rendered in black and grey with dark, misty branches, while the right side turns to colour with a blue sky, a yellow and orange sunset, pink blossom and green foliage. The shading is soft and detailed, and the design fills the whole back against a dark background.

The ash had dropped its last leaves on the north side of the car park, and Maureen Doyle stood at the eleventh-floor window with the kettle clicking as it cooled behind her. Nobody had planted the tree. It had come up through a crack in the tarmac the summer Calder House was re-clad, and for twenty years it had kept growing toward the only gap in the blocks where the sun came through.

The housing association wanted it felled. Their letter, folded in the pocket of her cardigan, used the word hazard three times. Kieran, her grandson, came over on Sunday with a measuring tape and a clipboard and paced the perimeter, counting the roots that had shouldered up the drain cover by the bins. He said the trunk was sound. He said it the way he said everything now, as though the facts might be persuaded to agree with him.
She had not told him what she saw when she looked down. In the mornings the flats on the north face sat in grey shadow, and the branches above the car park were bare and tangled as wire. But by four o'clock the sun slid behind the estate and lit the far side of the trunk, and the leaves that had come through in April caught it, pink and gold and a green so bright it looked wet. Every evening the tree turned itself toward the light, and every evening it came back to her window.
On Monday the council men arrived with a van and a yellow flag. Maureen watched until they had strung tape round the base, then she fetched the letter from the drawer and wrote on the back of it in pencil that the roots were to stay. Kieran could take it down to the office himself. The petals that had blown up against the glass were drying on the sill, and she left them there.
