Blue flower sleeve with swirling linework
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A woman's arm is covered in a full sleeve of blue flowers with dark swirling filigree linework and small heart shapes. The flowers are shaded in blue tones and sit along curling stems that wrap from the shoulder down to the elbow and forearm. The composition is cropped below the chin and the background is black, so the focus stays on the arm.

Mind the rope, it's older than your grandmother and twice as nosy. Sit down, I'll not start until the lantern stops hissing. There was a travelling show called Quillan's Wonder, and by the end of that August it had three elephants, one clown who could not juggle, and a wagon full of blue paint. The paint belonged to Mrs Hester Vane, who did the posters and, when the posters ran out, the ladies' arms. She had a rule: no blossom without a stem, and no stem that didn't go somewhere.

The Quillan boys wanted one last show before the ground was sold out from under them, and Hester said she would paint the whole ring if they paid for the turps. So for nine nights she worked by lamplight, brush in one hand and a rag in the other, curling vines up a young acrobat's arm from wrist to shoulder. Every curl had to turn back on itself twice, she said, or the vine would forget where it had come from. She pressed little silver hearts into the gaps, pulled from a tin of foil she'd kept since her wedding, and told the girl each one was a promise the show had made to the town.
On the last night a gust tore the tent flap, and the crowd saw the sleeve before the act had even begun. Nobody cheered. An old farmer stood up, looked at the blue roses climbing towards the shoulder, and said his mother had worn the very same flowers on her wedding dress. Then he paid for a ticket he didn't need and walked home in the rain. The show folded in October. The vines are still there on the girl's arm, Hester's last brushwork, and the hearts never did come off.
