Tree and anatomical heart on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tree with fine, spreading branches fills the upper part of the forearm, and its trunk narrows into a shaded, anatomical heart at the bottom. The linework is detailed and the branches fade into soft grey shading, while the heart uses smooth gradients and highlights for a three-dimensional look. The design is entirely in black and grey ink, set against pale skin and a plain grey fabric background.

The lamplighter of Harrow Lane swore the tree had been there before the houses, though nobody had ever seen its roots. It stood in the cut behind the chandler's, where the cobbles gave out to clay, and every night its branches reached over the wall into the gasworks yard as if looking for something it had dropped.

Old Mab Strand came with a lantern and a tin of sand one wet October. She knelt at the base where the trunk thinned to a knot, and she dug until her fingers found something warm and ribbed. It was a heart, the size of a loaf and grey as wet slate, and it beat once under her palm. She carried it home in her apron, up forty steps of the Shambles, and set it in a bread pan on the windowsill.
Nobody in the city knew what it fed on. The tree went on growing its fine dark twigs against the sodium glow, and the heart sat in its pan and pulsed at the rate of a sleeping man. Mab talked to it until the sun came up. The bakers said the loaves rose better on those mornings, and the constable said the cats stopped fighting under the bridge.
When the tree finally bloomed, it did so in a single night, every twig furred with soft ash-coloured leaves. In the morning the heart was gone from the pan, and in its place a sapling pushed up through the sand, its roots curling down through the floorboards towards the river. Mab's window still stands on Shambles Row. On still nights you can hear it under the cobbles, slow and steady, keeping time for the whole street.
