Bare tree with roots on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large bare tree with twisting trunk, many fine branches and exposed roots fills the leg, with the roots spreading down towards the ankle and foot. The linework is dark and detailed, with shaded bark and soft grey tones that give the trunk depth. The image shows the same leg three times side by side, with a plain light background and dark edges framing each view.

You learn the oak on the second night, when the generator quits and you walk the field with a torch to find the cable. It stands at the far gate of Hollin Meadow, bare as a coat hanger, every branch thrown up like the arms of someone who has just been told a price. Its roots have come up through the grass in grey ropes and run under the ghost train, which is why the ghost train has always leaned.

Mrs Tolland, who ran the coconut shy for forty years, said the oak was the fair's first ride. Before the hoopla stalls and the dodgems, a showman called Eli Marsh wintered his horses beneath it and sold the farmer's wife a ticket to look at the roots. She told you that story every October with her hands round a tin of tea, and every October the number of horses had changed.

This year the council wanted the tree felled for a car park. You went out with the surveyor's tape and found yourself measuring the roots instead, counting the ones that had split the tarmac of the old lot like cracks in ice. The surveyor asked what you were doing. You said you were counting years, and he laughed until you showed him the rings on the birch stump lying beside it.

The fair came back in April with its lights and its brass organ, and it set up around the oak rather than through it. On the last night you walked the field once more. The roots had lifted the ground, so the caravans sat a little higher than they should, and the whole circle of rides tilted towards that single grey trunk, as though everything that travelled had decided at last to stop and be counted.
