Tree and owl back piece with compass rose
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large tree with spreading branches and thick roots covers most of the back, with a horned owl perched on a branch at the upper left. A compass rose with a letter N sits on the upper right, and the trunk widens into roots at the base of the back. The piece uses fine black linework and grey shading on bare skin, with a plain dark background.

Old Hesper pinned a sheet of goatskin to the workshop wall and told Lysa to stop drawing the sea as though it were a field. The owl on the rafter blinked at them both, unbothered, as if it had been hired to watch her hands. Lysa chewed the end of her reed and tried again, but her coastline kept sprawling like spilt wine.

He drew the compass rose last, always last, with the eight winds fanned out like spokes and a big careful N at the top so no captain could mistake which way home lay. Lysa asked why the great tree grew in the middle of the chart, its roots thrust under the coast. Hesper tapped the ink dry with his thumb. 'Water leaves the land by the roots,' he said. 'Every harbour is only a branch that forgot where it came from.'
He died in the first frost. A merchant from Sidon, all rings and impatience, came for the chart with a purse of silver and asked for the harbours only, the tree and the winds struck through as clutter. Lysa took the purse. She did not give up the tree. That night she climbed the hill to the old oak where the owl roosted and sketched every root she could see in the moonlight, until bark, branch and ink became one dark thing.
Within a season the merchant's captains were steering by his copy, harbours and all, and none of them thought to ask about the tree. Lysa kept her own sheet pinned beside the owl. Each time a ship came home safe she added one root, so the roots reached a little further under the sea every year.
