Gnarled tree tattoo across a back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A large tree with a twisted, knotted trunk, bare spreading branches and roots fills most of the back. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading in grey and black that gives the bark a textured, almost carved look. Small muted green and orange-brown accents appear among the roots and along the trunk, set against bare skin and a dark background.

The ash went into the ground on the seaward side of the headland the spring after the Mary Ellen broke on the Teeth, and Hannah Rudd planted it because she said a light ought to have something at its back. The island folk laughed. Nothing grew on that rock but lichen and sea pinks, and the wind came off the water hard enough to flatten a man's coat against his chest.

The tree grew the way the wind wanted it to grow, bent low at first and then hauling itself upward, its trunk twisting like rope left wet in a barrel. Every week Hannah carried seaweed up the cliff path in a basket and packed it around the roots. When her husband Tom asked why she fussed over a stick, she said roots had to go down through the rock to find water, and a root that finds water never forgets the way back.
The lamp was lit each dusk and the tree took the gales on its branches. In the February the sea came over the causeway, Hannah took ill and died before the thaw, and for three nights the lamp stayed dark because Tom could not manage the stairs with his hip. On the fourth morning the village boys came up the path with a ladder and found the wick still dry, and the tree had dropped its last brown leaves in a ring around the lamp house as if to mark the place.
The autumn after, pale mushrooms came up among the roots, small caps like lanterns set low in the grass. Tom sat beneath the branches each evening until the light was lit. The fishermen who came home that winter said they counted the tree before they counted the light.
