Tree of life in a dotted circle on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tree with a full canopy of branches and a root system spreads inside a circle. The circle is outlined with small dots and arrow-shaped marks. The trunk and roots are solid, while the branches and canopy are built from fine lines and stippled dots. The tattoo is shown in close, even light against plain skin with a dark background at the top right.

Dear Nan, the mother starter in the blue crock has grown a crust like bark, and I came in at half four with the street still black. The ovens were ticking as they cooled from yesterday. I fed her two spoons of rye and one of white, and she bubbled up at me the way you used to when I was late with the flour.

Mr Okafor from the greengrocer's came for his order before the shutters were up, as he always does, and asked why I was still at it when the whole town slept. I told him bread keeps its own hours. I tipped the crock so he could see the grey threads that run down its inside, the ones that feed from the bottom and climb toward the light. He said they looked like a river map. I said they looked like yours.
This morning I scored the loaves in a ring, arrows round the edge as you taught me, and on the last one my knife slipped and left a dot where a line should have gone. In the oven it split along that dot and opened like a small mouth, and it came out the best of the batch. I have kept it on the windowsill for you, wrapped in a tea towel so it doesn't go stale before you see it.
Come home when the lane is clear. The starter is still going, and so am I. Yours, Hannah.
