Small tree tattoo on the nape of the neck

Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black tree with a thick trunk and branches that spread into clusters of leaves, with some leaves drifting off to the left. The tattoo is filled with black ink and sits centrally on the nape of the neck, with the subject's dark hair tied back above it. The skin is pale and the background is dark, so the black ink stands out clearly.

"Live plants are restricted," he said. "Anything with roots." She told him it was a rowan, which was true, and that her grandfather had dug it out of the hedge behind the lock-keeper's cottage the week before the reservoir came up over the meadow. She did not tell him that her grandfather had also cried into his cap while he did it, or that the cottage was now a fish farm's storeroom.

A gust came off the river and lifted the last leaves from the crown. They skittered across the white line painted on the tarmac and tumbled toward the booth, and the guard watched them go before he looked at her again. He asked whether she meant to plant it on the far side. She said she had promised to put it back where the water could reach its roots, because that was where it had come from.

He stamped the form and handed back her papers. Then he lifted the root ball out of the sacking himself, carried it past the barrier to the bank where the river had eaten into the earth, and pressed it down into the mud with both thumbs. When he straightened, a single leaf was caught in the cuff of his jacket. He picked it off, turned it over once, and let the wind take it back over the water.
