Tree of life with two figures on upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of a stylised tree of life fills most of the upper back, with swirling orange branches and roots forming a circle. Two human-like figures, one larger and one smaller, stand within the trunk, with green leaves and blue dots scattered through the branches. The outlines are dark and even, with flat colour fills and a plain pale skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hester had counted the sacks of flour twice before the lane vanished under the snow, and now she stood at the back door with the lamp, watching the drift climb the wall of the yard. The inn had no guests but the carter's boy, asleep by the range, and a dog that would not stop whining at the cellar hatch.

Her mother had painted the tree on the taproom beam the year they bought the place, orange as a harvest moon, its branches curling out past the edges of the wood into leaves of green and dots of blue like rainwater caught in bark. Under it two figures stood in the trunk, one tall, one small, the small one holding the tall one's hand. Hester had always thought the tree looked more like a fire than a tree, and her mother had laughed and said that was the point of a tree in winter.

The dog stopped whining. Hester lifted the hatch and found the cellar dry, the barrels sound, and a child's wooden horse wedged between two casks where nobody had put it. She knew whose it was without wondering. Her own, long ago, left behind when the snow came early and her father carried her up the stairs.

She set the horse on the bar beneath the painted tree and fed the range another log. By morning the lane would be a white road again, and someone would come up it looking for a bed. She left the lamp burning in the window for them, the way her mother had, so the orange of the branches would show through the glass like something still growing.
