Tree with heart trunk and curled roots

Neo-trad · Mixed · Photo

A stylised tree fills the frame, with a black and grey trunk and branches that twist around a heart-shaped opening near the centre. Bright green leaves sit along the branches, and the roots curl outwards into spirals at the base. The bold outlines and shaded trunk contrast with the flat green leaves against a pale skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been falling on the Saturday market since before the sheds opened, and by noon the cobbles ran like pewter gutters. Old Mairead Thorne kept her cart of seedlings under a tarpaulin and sold nothing but trees. Her youngest customer, a boy called Tobias Venn, came every week with a penny in his fist and asked the same question: which tree would hold a heart.

She always gave him the same answer, that a heart is never held by a tree but grown inside one. Then she would turn a sapling over and show him the roots, which she said had to curl like the ends of a fiddle scroll or they would never find water in clay ground. He did not understand this until the spring his mother left for the coast with a man who sold fish, and the boy stopped speaking for a month.

On the last Saturday of October Tobias came back with nothing in his hand. Mairead gave him a whip-thin ash with its leaves already yellowing and told him to plant it where the rain would reach. He dug a hole behind the bakery in the mud and set the roots in spirals, the way she had shown him.

By Candlemas the trunk had twisted itself into a loop near its middle, a hollow the exact shape of a heart, and the boy had started talking again, mostly to the tree.
