Tree silhouette and swing at sunset on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A bare black tree with a tall trunk dominates the design, with a silhouetted figure on a swing hanging from a lower branch on the right and small dark shrubs at the base. The linework and solid black silhouettes sit over soft, blended washes of purple, pink, orange and blue that suggest a sunset sky. The composition is shown across three vertical panels, with the tree repeated and the swing visible in the middle and right panels.

In the valley of Haverleigh, where the wind never settled, there stood a single ash tree that the villagers called the Waiting Tree. Its trunk was black as a chimney and its branches reached for the sky like the fingers of a woman calling her children home at dusk. Nobody planted it. It had always been there, the way the hills had always been there.

The miller's daughter, Ysolde Crane, was the first to tie a rope to its lowest limb. She was nine, and her mother said she would break her neck, but the rope held and the girl swung out over the reeds where the sun was going down. The sky behind her turned violet, then rose, then the colour of a peach just before it splits. She sang as she went higher, and the village folk stopped their work to listen, and some of them wept without knowing why.
Every evening after that, the swing creaked over the water meadow. The old men said the tree was keeping the sunset from falling too fast. The women said it was simply a child who did not want her day to end. When Ysolde grew tall and left for the city to learn letters, the rope stayed where it was, turning slowly in the dusk. Some nights, if you stood at the edge of the meadow, you could still see a small figure in the air, legs kicking toward a sky that had already gone dark.
