The cutting came over the hill in a jam jar wrapped in wet newspaper, and your grandfather held it up to the light as though it might change its mind. Nobody in Harrowby Bottom grew anything that bent like that. The trunk wanted to lean left, then right, the way a man weaves home from the pub, and he said it was waiting for the sun to make up its mind.

For eleven summers the tree did nothing but grow sideways. You watered it from the rain butt with a dented tin, and it sulked. Then the buds came, small and stubborn, and by the third spring there were leaves the colour of cooked jam and teal flowers that the bees ignored in favour of the lavender. Mrs Pargeter over the wall said it was showing off. Your grandfather said it was keeping its promises.

The year the mill closed, the leaves turned red early, and people stopped at the gate to look. Some of them took a cutting in a handkerchief. You let them. By October the lower branches were bare and the top was still burning, so you climbed the ladder with the secateurs, cut one spray of pink leaves, pressed it between the pages of Ruth's hymn book, and left the rest for the frost.

Next morning the trunk had split along one side, and inside the split was a new bud no bigger than a thumbnail, already leaning left.
