Tree world flash sheet with treehouses
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil flash sheet with the title TREE WORLD in decorative block lettering across the top. It shows several fantasy scenes: a hollow tree with round windows and clouds of foliage, a large mushroom with fairies or insects nearby, a tree trunk with a treehouse on top and a stair up its side, and a small house built into a stump. The drawing uses fine shaded linework and cross-hatching in grey pencil, with a few blue pencil guide lines.

The blue chalk lines were still on the oak when Tobias Crane arrived with his saw, because nobody in Hollin Dale had ever wiped them away. Old Mrs Pennock said they were the tree's own plans, drawn by whoever had lived inside before the lightning took the top off. Tobias didn't believe that, but he believed in good seasoned ash, and he took the commission all the same.

The commission came from a fairy who would not give her name and paid in puffballs. She wanted a stair that wound up the trunk past three round windows, a front door no taller than a teapot, and a roof of shingles that looked like cloud from below. Tobias worked through the wet week. Each evening the stairs had one more step than he had cut, and each morning the chalk lines had shifted a finger's width to the left.
On the ninth night he sat on the top step with a flask and waited. The mushroom by the well opened its cap like a parasol, and two insects the size of thumbs rose to hover over his head, humming a tune he almost knew. "You're finished," the fairy said from the window, "but you've forgotten the vine." He had not. There was no vine in the plan, yet a green thread was already curling round the rail and tying itself into a neat bow.
He charged her for the vine in the end, and she paid him with a single puffball, which he still keeps on the mantel. Mrs Pennock says the chalk is gone now, but Tobias can still find the lines if he looks at the bark early in the morning, faint and blue, running up towards the windows where somebody is waiting to be let in.
