Triangles and a sun and moon on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long wavy hair is photographed from behind in warm sunlight, holding a bunch of white flowers with one raised arm. Thin black outline triangles run in a diagonal line across the upper arm, and beside them a crescent moon with a face sits within dotted sun rays, all in fine line detail. The image is in black ink on skin, set against a soft, blurred green background.

Right, sit down, the lift's broken again so you'll have to hear this on the stairs. Forty years I've watched the sun come up over Wren House, and every morning it hit the east face of the eleventh floor before anything else on the estate. Nobody thanked it. The moon got the other side, the side with the bins, and it sulked about that for a century, which is why it grew a face. You don't get a face from being ignored politely.

Those three triangles on the wall of the lift shaft were there before the council ever painted anything. Young Dolores Abara scratched them into the render with a hairpin the summer her brother went to sea, one, two, three, pointing the way the ferries ran. She said they were directions. Her mother said they were scratches and went for the sponge. But the sun and the moon had been watching those triangles cross the paint for years, and the moon, who had nothing to do at night but look, decided it would be a fine thing to guide a boy home.
So the moon leaned over the estate and told the sun to keep its rays short and fine, the way you'd tell a child to hold a candle steady. For forty days the light came in low through the stairwell, and the triangles glowed like the edges of a map. On the forty-first morning a horn sounded across the river, and Dolores went down eleven flights in her slippers to meet it, and the moon, for once, didn't need to look away.
