Black fine line outline of three triangles and a sun with a face on the back of an upper arm, photographed in backlight.

Triangles and sun face on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind in warm backlight, holding a white flower while her hair blows loose. On the back of her upper arm are three small outlined triangles running diagonally down towards the elbow, and a larger sun or moon with a face and rays beside them. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or colour, and the subject sits in the right of the frame against a blurred tree background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the Conference pears have gone soft in the long grass, and your uncle Amos says the wasps will not wait for you to finish your tea. Walk the rows before the light turns sideways. He has chalked three small triangles on the gatepost, one for each tree the frost missed, and beside them the sun with a face, squinting, because that is how the orchard looks to him at this hour.

You take the wicker basket and the long picking pole down the slope past the damson hedge. The air smells of cut grass and fermenting windfall. Halfway down the third row a thread of spider silk catches on the pole and hangs there, shining in the low sun like a line someone forgot to rule. The spider has already gone, but the thread stays, and you follow it up into the branches where the old trees lean together like two people sharing a secret.

Amos planted these the spring after the flood took the lower field, when everyone said nothing would fruit on that clay again. He never explained the triangles. Perhaps they were the markers he used to pace out the rows, or perhaps they were only the shapes his hand made when he was thinking.

At the top of the last tree, higher than the pole can reach, a single pear hangs gold against the sky. You stand a long while with the basket empty at your feet. Then you leave it where it is, for the wasps and the sun, and walk back up the slope with your hands in your pockets.
