Tribal arm sleeve with spirals
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A side view of a man's arm and shoulder, with the head cropped out of frame at the top. The arm is covered by a full sleeve of black tribal-style patterning built from bold curved bands, spirals and triangles. The fine parallel hatching and solid black outlines give the piece a high contrast, graphic look against the warm, softly blurred skin tones and background.

The fair had lost its big top to a September gale, and by the time the wagons reached the river town there was only the ring left, a trampled circle of sawdust with the ropes still strung. Old Tomasz Wren carried the tent poles on his shoulders as if they were sleeping children. Nobody had asked him to. Nobody asked him for anything any more, which he took as a kind of freedom.

His grandmother had told him that the swirls painted on the caravan doors were not decoration. A spiral, she said, is a road that forgets its own start, and a triangle is a tooth that keeps a promise. She had painted them in black on every panel, and when the fair was young the strongmen had them inked along their arms so the crowds could read the family name in the coils. Tomasz had never believed a word of it. He believed the rope, the lamps, and the sums in the ledger.
On the last night the river rose and the town came down to the fairground to watch it drown. A boy from the mill asked whether the ringmaster still did the trick with the iron hoop. Tomasz said the hoop had rusted to the bottom of the cart. The boy nodded and held out a school exercise book, its margins already filled with spirals copied in biro from the caravan doors.
Tomasz turned the page and traced one curl with his thumb, from the outside inward, the way his grandmother had taught him to read a door. Then he gave the boy the stub of his best pen and told him to finish the road himself, starting from the middle.
