Tribal-style sleeve on upper arm and shoulder
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a man's arm and shoulder, with the head cropped out of frame, covered by a tribal-style sleeve. The design uses bold swirling curves, spirals and dense patterned fill in black ink, with negative space and shading that follow the shape of the arm. The background is softly blurred and the tattoo is the clear focus of the composition.

Brother, the boats came in again without Father, and the harbour master has stopped asking me to sit with the widows. I am writing instead because my hands will not hold still enough to sew, and you always said a thing should be put on paper before it puts itself on you.

The eddies off the Skerry turn in the same spirals as the pattern Old Ferris cut into the lintel of the ropewalk the spring you left. I watched him work it with a bone point and a pot of soot ink, pricking each curl until it went the colour of a bruised plum. He said a spiral is only a tide that has decided to stay put. I thought it a fine thing to say, until he showed me how the lines bunch where the pull is strongest and open out where the water lets go, so that the whole design reads like a current taking a rock by the shoulder.
Last night I laid the tide-tables beside that lintel and counted the turns between the high waters. Nine coils for every full cycle, the same nine that Ferris swore by. I did not sleep after that. At first light I went down to the quay and found a coil of new hemp left on the bollard, laid so the lay ran exactly as his spirals run. Nobody on the island owns hemp like that.
I have left it where it lies. If the sea wants to give him back, it will have to unwind the whole of it first, and I have never known the sea to be in such a hurry.
