Tribal calf sleeve with stars
Blackwork · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the calf with a band of tribal-style geometric patterns, including rows of triangles, bands of linework and a large sun-like motif near the top. Three stars sit above the design. The panels show the ink in red, then red and blue, then blue, against a yellow wooden floor, with crisp bold outlines and solid fill.

Dear Tomas,

The rain that came through Ortiga on Tuesday didn't last, and by Thursday the road south was a ribbon of dust again. Mrs Ocampo's shed lamp burned all night, so I knew you'd see it from the ridge. I've been meaning to tell you about the pattern Mr Eshe painted on the tailgate of the water truck. He copied it from a design his grandmother kept in a tin of old sea charts: a red sun with rays like open hands, a border of triangles marching like the teeth of a saw, and three small stars he dotted in gold because the gold was all he had left.
Thursday evening I sat on the step and watched the colours change. At noon the red was harsh enough to hurt your eyes, but as the light went flat and blue, the sun seemed to cool. When he switched to the indigo tin for the lower bands, the triangles turned into a row of tiny mountains. Nobody on the crew could agree which colour was the real one. Mr Eshe just laughed and said it depended on whether you were leaving or arriving.
I thought about that all the way to the border post. Maybe it's the same with this road: you come in blue and leave red, or the other way round. Anyway, the truck is ready. Bring the spare tyre from under the stairs when you come, and tell Dalia the stars are hers if she wants them.
Love, Inés
