Geometric band tattoo around a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black band of triangles, chevrons and stepped bars wraps fully around the forearm close to the wrist. The linework is bold, with areas of solid black alternating with stippled grey shading that gives the triangles and chevrons depth. The design is shown straight on against a dark floor and a black chair, with the band filling most of the frame.

The wedding was already late when Nan Oriel finally sat down with the black ink and the bone needle, because the bride would not be bound until the pattern was right. For three months she had walked the hill road above Carrick Bay, counting the stepped shoulders of the rocks, the sharp peaks of the gorse, and the swallows dipping low over the harbour wall. Each shape she drew on a scrap of sailcloth, and each one her daughter Ines sent back with a shake of the head.

The day before the wedding, Ines came down to the shed with her father's old boat-hook under one arm. She said the hills were too kind. She wanted the points to face up for the living and down for the men the sea had kept, and she wanted the chevrons to lean towards the water, so that anyone reading her arm would know which way the tide ran. Nan did not argue. She had made enough bands in her life to know that a pattern which is asked for twice is a pattern that has been waiting.

It took the whole night. Nan worked by one lamp, filling the solid triangles first and then bringing the grey up slowly with dots, the way the fog comes over the bay in stages. By dawn the band sat black and whole around the girl's wrist, and it was only when she lifted her hand to the window that Nan saw the grey had settled exactly where the light fell. The chevrons pointed the way home, and the ferryman, who had not yet looked up, nodded and rang the bell.
