Sit down, the lot of you, the cake will keep. No, I'm not finished, and you'll not hurry an old man who's been asked to speak at a wedding. Hush, Ruth, I can hear the fiddler tuning at the back. You all know the cross over the chapel door. Arthur Pardoe carved that the winter the harbour flooded.

He cut the knots up the stem the way his mother's people did, zigzags and hooked scrolls, so the wet would know where to stop. He never got a straight line out of a chisel without a dram in him, and that winter he'd had a good many, so the arms wander a bit, like a man walking home from the Crown. Nobody minded. The cloth was the trouble.
Two lengths came to him that spring. One was red and white stripes, cut from a curtain the mother of the girl he was courting had sewn for a wedding that never happened. The other was blue, with pale stars scattered across it, torn from the lining of a coat belonging to a boy off the lost boat. Arthur could not bear to cut either one. So he knotted them both round the crossbar and let them hang down the stem, one each side, and told the parish the cross was finished when it was tied.
Now Ruth's granddaughter is stood up there with her hand in Dan's, and the cloths are still knotted, faded now, and nobody has ever had the heart to untie them. So when the fiddler stops, mind the cross on your way out. It's the only thing in this valley that's ever been properly married.
