Black tribal flash design of a howling wolf head in profile set against a large circular moon, with no body placement shown.

Tribal howling wolf with moon

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A wolf's head in profile is raised towards the sky, with its jaw open as if howling, set within the outline of a full circular moon. The linework is bold and tribal, with solid black swirls, flame-like interior curves and spiky edges along the jaw, ears and neck. The design is drawn in black on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

Dear Tomas,

The snow closed the pass on Tuesday and it has not opened since, so you will have to take my word that the road is gone and the mule is eating its own blanket. Mrs Hadley has taken the back room with her three boys and says she will pay when the thaw comes, which I believe about as much as I believe the mule. We have eleven guests now and one sack of flour that I keep counting in the night.

Last night the moon came up over the ridge as round as a cartwheel and the wolves began. You remember Father saying they had gone from the high country years ago. They have not. Five or six voices, first one far off, then the whole ridge taking it up, until the glass in the kitchen shivered. Hadley's youngest wept. I went out to the step with the lantern and stood there, and the sound went through me the way cold water does.

What I did not tell the guests is that I answered them. I put my head back and gave them one long note, the way Mother used to call us in from the orchard. The silence afterwards was so complete that I heard the snow sliding off the eaves. Then, from somewhere below the inn, one more voice came up, lower and nearer, and it seemed to me it was saying the same thing I was.

Keep the stove lit. I will write again when the road shows itself.

Your loving sister, Ada
