Tribal phoenix with spread wings

Black and grey · Flash

A stylised phoenix with wings fully spread and a head raised above its body. The bird's long tail curls downward and round in a sweeping S-shape. The design uses solid black tribal-style shapes with bold, pointed feather detail and open white space.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

They were still arguing about the ferry fare when the bird came down over the salt flats of Tressel Reach, its wings spread so wide the gulls had nowhere to go. Mara Doll, who kept the lighthouse that no longer had a light, said it was a kite. Old Ansel said it was a sign. Nobody had seen a living thing so large since the grid went under.

The bird did not land. It hung above the causeway with its head raised and its long tail unwinding behind it, curling down and round like a river finding the sea. Where the tail passed over the rusted pylons, the metal went soft and green, and by morning the pylons had sprouted reeds. Ansel counted the feathers as they drifted down. Every one was sharp at the tip, like a blade or a question.

Mara climbed the lighthouse stairs with a bucket of lamp oil and a bad temper. The bird turned its head to look at her, slow as a tide table, and she understood that it was waiting for someone to ask it a plain question. So she did. What do you want from us? The bird opened its beak and no sound came out, but a feather fell at her feet, and when she picked it up it was warm, with a little light trapped inside the vane.

She lit the lamp that night with that feather. The causeway glowed all the way to the mainland, and the ferry, which had argued about fares for forty years, came in on the first tide without anyone asking it to. Ansel still says the bird is only resting on the other side of the sky, folding its wings until the tide goes out for good.
