Swirling hummingbird tattoo design
Black and grey · Flash
A hummingbird in flight faces right, with its long beak extended and its wings and body formed from dense, flowing scrolls and curls. The design uses bold black lines and tapering swirls with empty white space around the figure. It is a single-colour drawing with no shading beyond solid black fills and outlines.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Old Tamsin Cord kept the barge Ellery on the Lark Canal for forty winters, and in all that time she never once saw a bird that did not belong to the water. So when a hummingbird came in through the open hatch one June morning, hanging in the air above the stove as if it had been sent for, she put down her kettle and waited for it to tell her what it wanted.

It did not speak. It only turned its long needle of a beak toward the cabin shelf where she kept her mother's brass scales, then toward the window, then back to her. Tamsin had been raised on stories where animals did this, and she knew the rule: you follow, and you do not ask why.
She followed it up the towpath past the lock keeper's cottage, past the willows where the water went silver, to a stretch of bank where the old wharf had fallen into the reeds. There, hooked on a rusted ring, hung a little cage of wire scrolled so fine it looked like frost. Inside was a folded length of cloth, and inside the cloth was a key no bigger than a fingernail.
The hummingbird settled on the cage door and swept its wings in slow loops, leaving the air full of curling light. Tamsin unlocked the wire with trembling fingers and lifted out the key. When she turned, the bird was gone, but the reeds bent in a line that ran all the way back to her barge, as if someone had drawn it there in ink.
