Past the last of the broken arches, where the old keep of Harrowmere had lost its roof to the winter storms, a spider lived in the arrow slit that faced the valley road. Nobody in the village below had seen her clearly. They knew only her shape against the dusk, dark and even on both sides, like a seal pressed into wax.

Tomas the reeve went up there in the spring with a debt to collect. The last lord had been dead forty years and his heirs had sold the stones for walling, but the reeve still kept a ledger, and in it was written that the keep owed the mill a sack of silver for the stream rights. He climbed the broken stair with a lantern and a stick, and he found the spider sitting at the centre of a web that filled the whole chamber, every strand drawn tight and bordered with curling black knots.

She read his ledger for a long while. Then she unpicked one thread from the web and held it out to him. It was lighter than a hair, yet when he took it his arm dropped as if he had lifted a bell.

Tomas carried it down to the mill. In the morning the stream ran quiet and black, and the miller's daughter found a swirl of spun thread pinned to her door, shaped like the keep's old gate, with a small spider at its heart. The ledger was never opened again, and the reeve never climbed the stair a second time.
