Tribal spiral tattoos on hip and thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two large black tribal tattoos with bold spiral and curved motifs wrap around a hip and the outer thigh of a person. The linework is solid and dense, with the spirals filled in heavily and fine hatched detail in the surrounding bands. The image is in black and grey, with the skin tones and a patterned fabric in the background.

Ilse had been told the spirals were for the sea, not the sky, and she had believed it until the navigation drill failed for the third time that week. The ship's charts had drifted again. Every bulkhead screen showed the same smear of stars, and the instructors kept saying the correction would come from the grid, which was something people said when they had never looked through the hull.

Her grandmother, Hine, had carried the old way in ink. Ilse remembered the bold black curls on Hine's skin, folding inward like a wave pausing to think about itself, and how Hine would trace the largest spiral with one thumb when she was about to tell a story she did not want to tell. The curl was the unfurling fern, Hine said, the start of a thing that keeps growing toward its own centre. Ilse had thought it was only decoration until she saw the same curve scratched into the galley wall beside the weather lattice.
She took the pattern to the observation blister at the start of the night watch. She pressed her palm to the cold glass, thumb moving the way Hine's had, and let the inward turn set the rhythm of her counting. Three turns in, the wandering stars slid into a shape she half-remembered, a long arm of light she had seen once on a training slide and dismissed as noise.
At the heart of the spiral she found a fixed point. She keyed the coordinates into the manual board, and the ship answered with one soft tone. Ilse sat back and laughed quietly at the bulkhead, because the old way had never been about going out. It had been about turning back toward the place you began, and knowing it when you reached it.
