Black linework mandala and paisley on hip and back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large ornamental tattoo covers the lower back and hip, with a central mandala flower surrounded by scrolling paisley shapes and a snake-like pattern rising up the side of the torso. The design is built from fine black lines with dotted detailing, and the shading is minimal, with the skin tone showing between motifs. The composition follows the curve of the body, with the mandala sitting over the hip and the swirls sweeping towards the thigh.

Mr Dacre wanted the pattern card by Friday, and Edie had been at the squared paper since breakfast, tracing the same serpent over and over until it stopped looking like anything at all. Above her the lace machines clattered through the floor of the drawing office, a sound she had stopped hearing years ago and only noticed now because she was trying to hear something else.

The snake was the problem. Every design the firm had sold for a decade was built on a grid of tiny holes, and a snake does not sit politely on a grid. She had drawn it coiling up a column in pen, scale by scale, and then the mandala wanted the space where its tail had been. So she let the tail go. She let it curl out past the edge of the card and turn itself into a paisley, a teardrop with a fern growing out of it, and then into a spiral that ended in a dot so small the needle would barely find it.
On Friday Dacre held the card to the window and said nothing for long enough that she counted the machines. Then he laughed, short and surprised. "Where's the snake gone?"
"It's still there," Edie said. "You just have to follow it round."
He pinned the card to the wall above the bench, where it stayed for thirty years, and nobody in the mill ever worked out which way the serpent went.
