The tide at Tamarin Cove turned along the grove's oldest tree, where a spiral had been cut into the bark so long ago that the grain had grown around it. When Ada Meru's brother did not come back from the reef at dusk, their mother walked the shore with a basket of dried fish and pressed her palm to that spiral, the way her own mother had taught her.

The water was quiet at the rocks, but the foam ran in circles there, first left and then right, as if the sea could not decide which way to go. Her mother followed the rings of foam inward until a green turtle surfaced beside her, older than any boat in the village, its shell scrolled with pale lines like the marks on the tree. It said nothing. It only turned slowly and swam into the current, and she went after it with the fish held high.

They came to a cave where the sea ran in a coil and out again, and there was her son, asleep on a ledge with his feet in the water and his hands full of sea urchin spines he had not thought to drop. She lifted him out of the current one breath at a time. When she looked back, the turtle was gone, but the swirl in the water had loosened into ordinary waves.

That spring she cut a small turtle into the tree, high in the top curl, where the bark was smooth. Each year after, when the tide turned wrong, the people of the cove go to the grove and find the carving wet, though it has not rained for a week.
