Tribal turtle with bubbles on the hip
Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised sea turtle seen from above, built from bold solid black fins and a spiral-patterned shell, with stippled dots filling the flippers and head. Shaded grey bubbles surround the turtle at varying sizes, adding depth and a sense of movement. The tattoo is shown in black ink on the side of the hip, with the top edge of a striped swimsuit visible above it.

The harbour lights in Hull were doubled in the wet, and Tomasz had been hosing diesel off the fish-market steps since two in the morning when the water beside the lock gate began to bubble. Not the fizzing kind that meant a leaking hydraulic line, but round bubbles, one after another, rising in a neat line as if someone below were counting them up.

Then a turtle surfaced. Its shell was dark as wet slate and carved with a spiral drawn so precisely it could have been done with a compass, every ridge notched like a saw blade. Its flippers spread wide and mottled, freckled with small stipples like spray on sand. It hung in the glow of the crane for a long moment, blinking at him. "You're a long way from anywhere," Tomasz said, and the turtle, having no opinion on this, sank again.
He rang Dorota at the cold store. She said green turtles did not come up the Humber, then said it was probably a bag of something floating. But at dawn, on the wet stones of the lock, he found a curl of pebbles laid out in a spiral, each one smooth and grey as a bubble frozen mid-rise. He picked one up. It was warm.
He carried it back to the water and dropped it in. A single bubble rose to meet it, and the ripples widened across the dock, turning slowly the way that shell had turned, as though the whole harbour had been wound by the same patient hand.
