Triquetra on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A triquetra, a three-pointed Celtic knot made of interlocking loops, sits on the outer ankle. The linework is bold and the loops are shaded in greys to give a raised, ribbon-like three-dimensional look. The tattoo is centred on a lightly reddened patch of skin against a dark textured carpet, with the photograph taken at a close angle.

Dear Morag,

The nets came in heavy again on Tuesday, so Dad and I have been on the quay since five with the needles. Your shuttle is still on the nail by the door where you left it. I haven't moved it, though Mrs Tulloch keeps asking why.

Grandmother's knot is what I keep thinking about. You remember how she made three loops on every float rope, each one going over and under the others so you could never find where one began. She said a line tied that way couldn't be pulled apart by one man alone. Dad laughed at her. Then the Marigold went out in March and came back with only two men aboard, and he hasn't laughed about knots since.

Last night I tried to tie one on the old cork float, sitting on the step with the lamp lit, and got it wrong three times. The third time the loops closed on themselves and I couldn't see where I'd started. I left it on the step. This morning Dad had picked it up and was turning it in his fingers without a word, the grey light on the cord.

The boats go out at four. Come home at Easter if you can, and tell Aberdeen I said nothing. Your loving sister, Ailsa.

P.S. I've kept the knot. It's in my coat pocket.
