Red interlaced heart knot tattoo

Other · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a symmetrical interlaced knot shaped like a heart, with two looping ends at the sides. The lines are outlined in black and filled with red ink, with darker red shading along the strands to give them depth. The design sits centred on a close crop of smooth skin with plenty of empty space around it.

Hand me that twine, and mind the oven door, it has a temper before the light comes up. No, leave the flour alone, you'll only sneeze it over the proving cloths. Sit on the upturned crate where I can see you, because I'll not tell this twice before the first tray goes in.

There were two children on the harbour road at Carrick Bay, Nessa Quill and her brother Tom, and their mother kept the bakehouse under the chandler's. The winter they were twelve, the sea gave up a sea chest on the strand, and inside it, wrapped in tar cloth, was a length of red silk ribbon. Nessa wanted it for her hair. Tom wanted it for a sail. They cut it down the middle with the bread knife, and their mother, who could tie a knot in her sleep, folded the two ends into a heart and looped them round until it held. 'Two halves that won't come apart,' she said, 'and neither of you gets the whole.'

Tom went to sea at nineteen and Nessa kept the ovens. Every year at the turn of the tide she shaped a loaf with the same looping crust and left it on the quay for whichever boat was coming home. Eleven years of loaves went uncollected, and the gulls grew fat on them.

Then one February a loaf was gone from the quay in the morning and a red ribbon lay in its place, cut clean at one end, with a tarred note tucked under the knot. It said only: the other half is still wet. Mind the oven.
