My father kept a rule that the strongbox never left the cellar unlocked, and I kept it until the surveyor asked me to write his night's rent in my own hand. I wrote it in the back of the guest ledger, the letters running into each other the way Dad taught me. When I looked up, the girl was watching my pen as if it were a coin she meant to take. She asked me to write one word for her. Not a name, she said. Just the word for what she was going to do in the morning.

I wrote it: trust. She shook her head and asked me to join the letters so they could not be pulled apart. So I looped the t into the r and the s into the t until the whole thing ran as one stroke, and she laughed and said that was the trick of it.

In the morning the plough came through at nine. The canvas case was gone from the boot room, and the ledger had a new line in the margin, in a hand that was not mine, and the rent was paid in full.
