Sitting cat silhouette on the wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of a cat seated facing left, with its tail curling up along its back, sits on the inner wrist. The hand is raised with the fingers loosely curled and the palm turned towards the camera, with a soft shadow falling on the pale wall behind. The image is in black and grey tones, and the tattoo is the only point of dark ink in the frame.

The apples came down heavy that August, and Mrs Pell's black cat sat on the orchard wall every evening to watch them go. She did not chase the windfalls, nor the wasps, nor the blackbirds. She sat with her tail curled along her back and looked at the gate, because the gate was where the trouble came from.

Trouble came in the shape of a village boy called Tobias Frane, who had been taking Pell's Russets since midsummer and selling them at the Saturday market under his own name. Each time he climbed the wall, the cat was already sitting there, straight as a post. Each time he reached for a branch she turned her head very slowly to face him, and he lost his nerve before she had needed to move at all.
By the third week he was frightened of her. He told the carter that the cat was a witch's familiar who counted the fruit. Pell laughed when she heard it and said the cat had never counted anything in her life, but she set a saucer of cream by the wall anyway, and the boy never came back for a single apple.
Come October the wind took the last leaves and the orchard went quiet. Each morning the saucer was licked clean, and on the top rung of the ladder, where no boy could reach, sat one Russet, polished as though someone had rubbed it on a sleeve. Pell never learned who had put it there. The cat only blinked at her from the wall and went on watching the gate.
