The snow had shut the Cragg Road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday Mrs Pryce had stopped apologising for the cold bedrooms. I was working at the window table with a stub of graphite when she brought my tea, and she looked at my page for longer than politeness allowed. I had drawn twelve small flowers from the hedgerows above my mother's house in June: a tulip bud, a poppy gone papery at the edges, a daisy with its face turned away, grasses bowed under their own weight. None of them were in the room. Outside, the lane was a white ledge, and the only colour for miles was the smoke from her chimney.

She put the cup down and tapped the thistle at the bottom corner. Her husband, Idris, used to walk the top field every August and bring home seed heads for the kitchen table, she said, because the goldfinches came for them and he liked to watch. He had not been up the field since the spring before last. She asked whether I could draw one more, not from a book, but from her telling of it: a thistle head the size of a thumbnail, the seeds lifting off it like sparks, the stem so thin it nearly vanished into the paper.

I worked on it through the afternoon while the light went blue on the glass. The stem kept wanting to be thicker than it was, and I kept rubbing it back until it was almost nothing. When I finally turned the sheet round, she held it near the lamp for a long time and didn't say anything at all.

In the morning the plough had been through the lane, and the road was a dark rope running down to the valley. Mrs Pryce had pinned my thistle above the bar, beside the hearth, next to a calendar still turned to February.
