Three fine line leafy sprigs

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

Three slender sprigs of oval leaves stand upright side by side, each drawn with a single thin black outline and no shading. The stems are simple lines that branch into smaller leaves, with the left and centre sprigs slightly fuller than the right. The drawing sits on a plain cream background with generous empty space around it.

You find the cuttings in the hour before the council men come with their saws, behind the railings of St Anselm's, where the old privet has been dying from the root up since spring. Your coat pockets are soon full of damp newspaper, and you cut with the bread knife you swore you would never use on anything but bread. Three sprigs, none longer than your forearm, each one bristling with small oval leaves that catch the sodium light like coins. You wrap them tight and walk the long way home so the wet paper does not split.

The night bus across the river is nearly empty. The conductor asks what you have, and you say hedge, which is true enough. At the flat above the launderette you stand three jam jars on the windowsill and fill them from the cold tap. The dryers downstairs hum through the floorboards like a slow tide, and you sleep badly with the sound of water being poured into glass.

By the second week two of the sprigs have put out fresh leaves at every joint, the fuller ones, reaching up toward the streetlamp as if it owes them something. The third stays thin and round-leaved, and you nearly tip it into the bin on a Tuesday. Then on Thursday a single green oval unfolds at its very top, and you press it gently with one finger to be sure.

The privet is gone by June, the council having had its way, but the three jars are still on the sill. You turn them every morning so the sprigs lean west, toward the river and the lamp that never goes out.
