Twin skeletons and eye on a back piece
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo covers the upper back, centred on two skeleton figures standing side by side with arms outstretched inside a geometric frame of fine dotted lines. An eye within a rayed triangle sits above them, and sprigs of leaves and flowers fill the lower left and right, with a tooth enclosed in a dotted circle below the figures. The linework combines stippled dotwork shading with solid outlines, and the symmetrical composition is framed by the bare skin of the back and a grey top at the bottom edge.

You reach the col before your sister does, which has been the arrangement since you were children on the Tyne. The wind off the scree tastes of iron. Below you the valley is a sheet of grey cloud, and Marit is still somewhere under the last snowfield, cursing the brass theodolite she insisted on carrying. You unfold the chart on a flat stone and pin its corners with two pebbles and your right glove.

The chart is the trouble. Every survey you have run in this range comes back wrong in the same small ways: three peaks that should sit in a line fall at angles no honest instrument would give, and the spring at the foot of the pass appears on paper under a name nobody in the village uses. Marit says the mountain is only lying because the old surveyors drew it in dots, that the dots mark the places where measurement stopped and memory took over. You told her that is the sort of thing people say shortly before they walk off a ledge.
She arrives breathing hard, holding a tin with a single molar wrapped in lamb's wool, which she dug from the sexton's spoil heap in March. She says it gives the true datum. You don't argue. You set the sight on the highest rock, where the old drawing puts its triangle, and the cloud tears open for the length of one breath. The valley lies flat and exact beneath you, every ridge where the dotted lines said it would be. Marit takes the pencil from behind your ear and marks the bearing, and you both see that the line runs straight through the spring, as if it had always been waiting to be counted.
