Stag and tree in geometric frame on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A stag stands on a faceted rock beneath a large, spreading tree, all enclosed within overlapping diamond-shaped geometric lines. The tree canopy and the animal are built from fine stippled dots, while the frame, rock edges and two solid dots above and below are drawn with clean, sharp linework. The design is entirely black and grey and sits centrally on the upper arm, with the wearer's shoulder and a dark sleeveless top around it.

Ruth had swept the parquet of the Coldharbour Hall twice before the last waltz was called, and still the chalk from the diamond pattern showed through the wax where the dancers had worn it thin. Ned Farrant leaned on the doorframe with his cap in his hands and asked her, for the third Saturday running, whether she would dance the last one with him.

She said she had the bins to bring in. It was not true, but the bins were real enough, and the yard behind the hall was where the old oak stood, its branches thick with small dark leaves that never quite turned in autumn. Her father said the oak had been there before the hall, before the quarry men cut the grey slab that sat beneath it like a plinth. Every winter, he said, a stag came down off the Clee to stand on that stone and look at the lit windows, and nobody had ever seen it leave.
Ned followed her out regardless. The lamp above the door made a pale circle, and beyond it the dark was freckled with the tree's shadow. The stag was there, its antlers spreading like the oak's upper limbs, one forefoot lifted. Ruth stopped with the bin lid in her hands. For a moment she thought it looked at Ned rather than at her.
"Go on, then," she said. "Ask it." Ned laughed, and then he did not, and the stag stepped down from the stone as though the ground had been waiting for it. It crossed the yard and went through the open door into the hall. Ruth went in after it. Ned stood at the threshold with his cap still in his hands while the band played the last waltz, and when she looked for the stag between the couples there was only a faint mark on the floor where the diamonds met, and one dark oak leaf lying on it like a full stop.
