Twin women and bear full back piece
Neo-trad · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large back piece shows two mirrored female faces framed by pale flowers and jewelled headpieces, with a bear's head and two smaller bear faces below them. Hands holding a jewel and dense filigree scrollwork fill the lower back. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth and greyscale, with muted skin tones on the faces and soft greenish-grey in the flowers.

You reach the castle at dusk, when the east tower has already given up half its stones to the ivy, and the two sisters are waiting under the arch as though they expected you since spring. Marguerite and Aude have the same grey eyes and the same dark lip paint, though only one of them ever speaks for both. Their mother's mirror hangs between them on a nail, cracked straight down the middle, and in it the flowers on their heads are always wilting a little faster than the ones on the real heads.

The bears come down from the hill in the evening to drink at the moat. There are three of them: the great one with a grey muzzle, and two smaller ones that never come without him. The sisters say they keep the jewel in the kitchen drain, a purple stone the size of a plover's egg, which the castle's last lord won at cards from a stranger who came up the valley road with iron rings for knuckles. You are told you may hold it once, and only if you give back something you have taken.
You have taken nothing, you think, until you check your coat and find the brass key to the chapel door, lifted from the steward's hook that morning without you meaning to. Aude watches you find it. Marguerite is tracing a line of ash across the flagstones with one finger, the way the carved vines run round the chapel arch.
You give her the key. The bear with the grey muzzle lowers his head to the moat, and the black water shows you the three of them, and the two women, and the pale flowers, all on one face, all looking back. When you look up the sisters are gone, and the jewel is lying in your palm, warm as a hand.
